NARN

The Narn Regime

The Narn are a proud and aggressive race whose history is shadowed by their violent relationship with the Centauri. They are one of the less evolved races and have only achieved their status among the more advanced ones because of their aggressiveness, large population and the technology stolen from the Centauri.

Appearance:

Narns are stronger and tougher than humans, and the most obvious difference is their spotted and reptile-like skin.

Planet:

The Narn homeworld was a fertile planet until the Centauri conquered it and began exploiting both the people and the planet itself. The culmination of this ecological rape came in 2259 when the Centauri bombed the planet with meteors. As a result a layer of dust in the atmosphere changed the climate of the entire planet, making it almost uninhabitable. After joining the Interstellar Alliance the Narns have received help from the Minbari in restoring their planet's ecosystem.

Government:

The Narn are led by a council called the Kha’Ri. The Centauri dismantled the council in 2259, but it was probably restored in 2261 when Narn was freed.

Religion:

There are several religions in Narn. Most people are followers of either G'Lan (an angelic being of light), G'Quon (a religious leader) or Na'ki'li. Ambassador G'Kar became also a religious figure after the publication of the Book of G'Kar in 2262.

Telepathy:

The Narn do not have telepaths. In the penultimate Shadow War the Shadows killed all telepaths and their families to root out telepathy altogether. Narns still have the latent telepathy gene, but unfortunately it isn't strong enough to produce Narns with telepathic abilities. At least since late 2250's there have been attempts to buy DNA samples from telepathic races to be used in attempts to restore Narn telepathy.

History:

Somewhere in the the 13th century (Earth time), long before the Narn were capable of leaving their home planet, the Shadows used their planet as a base. To hide their weaknesses the Shadows had almost all Narn telepaths and their families killed. Their reign only ended when G’Quon and the few remaining telepaths managed to drive the malevolent First Ones away.

The Narn, still a peaceful agrarian people, were enslaved again in 2110, this time by the Centauri. For the next hundred years the Centauri exploited the planet, but eventually the Narn managed to drive them away by using stolen Centauri weapons. A period of rapid development followed and the Narn used left-over Centauri technology to claim their place among the most powerful races alongside the Centauri, the Minbari and the humans.

During the late 2250's the already infected relations between Narns and Centauri went further downhill as the Narn tried to revenge their former masters. For a while they were able to keep the Centauri Republic - now a a mere shadow of its former glory - in their leash, but when a war finally broke between the two races, the Centauri had in secret allied themselves with the Shadows. The war ended with the Centauri bombing Narn home world with asteroids killing millions of Narns. The bombings also resulted a ecological disaster - the dust in the atmosphere didn't allow any light through thus affecting the winds and the temperature. The Narn surrendered and were once again enslaved. The second Centauri occupation was no different from the first one - the Narn were considered no more than animals.

The occupation ended when Londo Mollari had the Centauri Emperor Emperor Cartagia assassinated. G'Kar had helped him in the deed and in return Mollari - now the Prime Minister and de facto ruler of Centauri Republic - freed Narn.

After gaining freedom (and actually in some extent already before that) the Narn helped the Army of Light first in the Shadow War and later in the Earth Civil War. Narn was also one of the first members in the Interstellar Alliance, though together with the Drazi they did soon act against President Sheridan's wishes by attacking Centauri Prime.
