GalenBoth of Galen's parents were techno-mages and when he was old enough, he became his father's apprentice. His mother was not happy with this as she would have wanted to teach Galen herself. After his parents killed each other, Galen ended up being taught and raised by the techno-mage Elric. Galen and Elric lived on the planet Soom, Elric's place of power. In October 2258, just days before becoming a full mage, Galen accidentally discovered a spell with unimaginably destructive powers. In a moment of rage he used this spell against his friend Elizar, wounding him, and was almost cast off the Order because of this. The members of the techno-mage ruling council, the Circle, allowed him to stay, partly because they believed he had meant no harm, partly because they realised that his spell could someday be useful. During his initiation ceremonies Galen fell in love with Isabelle, another soon-to-be techno-mage. Immediately after the ceremonies the Circle sent both Galen and Isabelle to her homeworld, Zafran 8, to investigate rumors suggesting that the Shadows had returned. In the course of their investigations Galen and Isabelle were discovered by the Drakh and a cast-off techno-mage who had once been their friend. Isabelle and Galen survived the confrontation, but Burell, Isabelle's mother and teacher, who had come to help them, was killed. Because they had information that could be used against the Shadows, Isabelle and Galen were now in great danger. They took the first ship off the planet and made plans to rendez-vous with the techno-mage Elizar who would then take them back to the rest of the techno-mages. What they didn't know was that Elizar and his sister Razeel were now working for the Shadows and wanted not only the information Isabelle and Galen had, but also the secret of Galen's spell of destruction. For a while Galen and Isabelle were able to hold their own in the fight of magic and spells, but were too weak to defeat both Razeel and Elizar. In order to save Galen Isabella then used the last of her strength to shield him from a deadly spike Elizar had send towards them. He was saved, but she was mortally wounded. Morden offered Galen one last change to save her in return for joining the Shadows, but he knew that the price was too high to pay and she died on his arms. Galen returned to the Circle and confronted them with the knowledge that the Shadows had returned and that some of the techno-mages had joined the enemy. The Circle then decided that it was best for the techno-mages to flee rather than to risk having their secrets fall into the wrong hands. While the other mages prepared for their move Galen joined the techno-mage Blaylock on a mission to find out how much exactly the Shadows knew. He wasn't interested in intelligence gathering, though, but rather hoped to meet Elizar and to revenge Isabelle's death. He got his wish as Elizar lured him and his companion to a trap. Elizar didn't kill Galen but revealed to him the truth about the techno-mages - that they were creations of the Shadows. Elizar asked him again to join the Shadows, but even though Galen had lost his faith in the techno-mages, he refused. Then with the help of the shadowship-core Anna, Elric's friend Alwyn, and a Narn Captain, he escaped and in a moment of rage destroyed the entire city with his spell. The few months that Galen had been a full mage had changed his view of the world completely. Before, his only dream had been to become a techno-mage, now he had only contempt for his brotherhood. Still, in February 2259 Galen joined Elric to enter the secret techno-mage hide-away, but only because he believed his powers would be too dangerous to be allowed to fall into the wrong hands. On his way there he disobeyed the rules one more time by rescuing Matthew Gideon from a certain death. The next eleven months Galen spent trying to learn to control the power of his spell of destruction which was slowly driving him insane. When Elric then died at the hands of a fellow techno-mage, Galen embarked on a mission to kill Morden, Elizar and Razeel so that they could not lure any more techno-mages onto the Shadows' side and also because he suspected that they too now knew the spell of destruction. It was a suicide mission, but he did not care - he wanted only revenge and was planning to kill himself after the mission in order destroy the spell for good. Galen confronted Morden on Babylon 5 but felt sorry for the man and eventually let him go and concentrated on finding Elizar and Razeel. He tracked them down to Z'ha'dum and arrived there in December 2260, only days before Anna and John Sheridan. Knowing that Sheridan would be crucial to Army of Light's victory, he then decided to aid the captain in his attempt to destroy the Shadow capital. He confronted the treacherous techno-mages, but was unable kill them and eventually walked straight into a trap, realising that he had been lured to the planet for them to make him the core of the Eye, the living machine that controls the whole of Z'ha'dum. Galen became a part of the machine but he managed to escape when he discovered a spell that enabled him to become truly one with his tech. He then disabled the planetary defense systems allowing Sheridan's whitestar to enter the planet's atmosphere and as the ship, armed with 500 megaton nuclear warheads, crashed into the city, he made one last desperate attempt to save not only himself but also Morden. They both almost died, but with the help of Lorien Galen was able to restore himself and Morden back to health. Leaving Morden to the care of Lorien, Galen (who had found peace of mind when he had become one with his tech and no longer longed for death) returned to the techno-mages' hiding place where he was hailed both as a hero and as a traitor to his order. In 2267 Galen again involved himself in the affairs of humans as he found out that the Drakh were planning to destroy Earth. Through an electronic incantation disguised as a dream he contacted four people: Sheridan, Dureena Nafeel, Captain Anderson and a Drazi merchant. He told them how to prevent the attack, but even still the Drakh managed to poison Earth. This was the proverbial last straw for the techno-mages who ordered Galen to leave their hiding and never to return. With nowhere else to go, the rebellious techno-mage decided to join the crew of the Excalibur, following the ship with his own ship, helping out whenever he felt like it. On the side he also helped Vir Cotto in his attempt to drive the Drakh off Centauri Prime. Episodes: ACtA, C1-C4, C9-C10 |
